Yes, Annie Sullivan is a good communicator since she has to teach a child (Helen Keller) who is both deaf and blind to communicate, in turn. She may not have been a good communicator with her parents, especially her father, however. If the parents had better understood the treatment program of behavior modification, the father would not have been tempted to fire Annie and would have known the techniques to reinforce the treatment means. At meal time, for example, Helen should never have been allowed and encouraged to swipe food from another’s plate.
Today, there are what they call I.E.P.s (Individualized Educational Programs) which state the short term goals and the long term goals of treatment, and the parents have to sign an agreement and are kept abreast of any and all treatment sessions.
