Man Who Would Be King, TheMan Who Would Be King, The (1975)

IMDB rating: 8.00

Plot: ” The Man Who Would Be King” is about two ambitious ex-soldiers stationed in India who set out to become the rulers of an entire country. After finishing their tour of duty in India, Daniel Dravot and Peachy Carnehan have decided that India is “too small for the likes of them,” so they decide to bribe a local ruler and extort money from him, in order to buy twenty Martini rifles, which they will use to take over villages in Kafristan. They face many challenges and perils along the way, including difficult terrain, hostile natives, freezing temperatures, and an avalanche high in the mountains. They eventually come to a small village, Urheb, where they meet Ootah and Billy Fish, an Indian who speaks English; he then becomes their translator. They then train the natives of this village to use the rifles, and soon conquer village after village. During a battle, Daniel is struck by an arrow that seemingly sticks out of his chest. The ignorant natives believe that he must be a God for not having died, and fall down and begin worshiping him. Daniel and Peachy decide that it would be easier for a “God ” to take over the country, so they pretend that Daniel is a god, the son of Alexander the Great who has returned after 2200 years to again rule Kafristan. The entire country celebrated the return of their new ruler, the Son of Segunda (”Alexander”). As a token of their admiration, the holiest of holy men gives Daniel all of the gold and riches left by Alexander in 328 B.C. It is enough to make them the richest men in the world . . . All goes well until Daniel’s ego and greed gets the best of him. He asks Peachy to bow when he walks in front of him. He later tells Peachy that he has decided to stay, and now believes that he is the son of Alexander ( ‘in spirit, anyways”), and that to fulfill his destiny, he will marry Roxanne, like his “father” Alexander did before him. The Kafiri’s believe that a mortal cannot marry a God, but Daniel goes ahead anyway. Peachy was set to leave with his share of the treasure, but Daniel convinced him to stay ” for old time’s sake” for the wedding. At the ceremony, Roxanne, believing that she would soon die, bites Daniel, drawing blood. The entire crowd realizes that since Danny is bleeding, that he is a man, not a God, and that he has been deceiving them the entire time. Peachy grabs Daniel and they run off with their twenty soldiers, shooting at the crowd of monks who set out to kill them. They are eventually captured, and Daniel is forced to walk out on a rope bridge. The monks cut the ropes, and Daniel bravely falls to his death. Peachy is later crucified; when they come to see him the next day, he is still alive, and they say that it is a miracle that he lived and they cut him down. He eventually climbs down into the valley and retrieves Danny’s head, still wearing the crown. He brings it back to Rudyard Kipling, a writer for the Northern Star, as proof that Daniel accomplished his goal, and became the King of Kafristan. Themes developed in the story: 1. ambition 2. friendship 3. taking risks 4. perseverance (not giving up) 5. power 6. honor and dignity

How has President Obama been able to fool so many people so completely and so quickly?
I had a talk recently with several Black people about Obama’s blatant anti-Black position and total disregard for the Black community that he should have a special bond with. I was chastised, threatened with physical harm and a woman started crying, as I shared facts about Obama. I just can’t rationalize how people can become so engrossed by someone that they know nothing about or who has done nothing for them. Is it just because he looks like us, that Blacks like him so? I just don’t get it.

Here are just a sample of what I shared: Of the millions in campaign money Obama had, he spent virtually none with Black media. He walked out of a Black church that he spent 20 years in and threw the pastor, who married him and he called a father figure, under the bus and hasn’t been in a Black church since. This is not Christian behavior. One of his first signed bills was to use federal money to kill African babies through abortions. Blacks in mass have been suffering like dogs for as long as I can remember, yet I don’t know of any march or protest that Obama has ever been a part of in his whole life, yet Blacks compare him to Dr. King who died for Black causes. Blacks got on Bush for being days late for Katrina victims, yet Obama took almost a year to get to New Orleans. The clincher was that Obama voted for Bush, approving his second term, then spent his whole campaign talking about a man that he voted for, outside of party lines. It just goes on and on, and no Black spokepersons say anything to speak up for the masses of suffering Blacks who are being ignored by their President. Does anyone understand why this is? Or is it just me that’s crazy?

How many people did he fool? Link?

You don’t like him. That is your right.

But to assume that others were fooled because they did vote for him is very arrogant on your part.

a few points i would like to add that people seem to overlook(especially african americans).
1. Obama is not black. He is a milado(black and white mix). It infuriates me that people call him black when he is not physically.
2. If you are referring to al sharpton that man is a lunatic, and an anti american hate monger.
3. Obama has no loyalties to anyone except islam. He only uses black people as a shield, and leverage.

sorry if this offended anyone, but the truth can hurt.

He hasnt fooled anyone, where are your facts. Are you trying to get a book deal??

You’re not crazy and we are going to see a lot more of this and it is amazing isn’t it. He has never done anything for anyone and doesn’t plan to. His goal is to destroy this country and he is doing a mighty good job of it too. I saw Bush speak on TV the other day at SMU in Texas and it was so refreshing to hear someone make sense and talk without insulting half the nation.

Natural talent.
That and an opposing party that is disintegrating as we watch.

It’s not just Obama. Look at Congress and the Senate! Liars, Thieves, Self-centered, Constitutional illiterates. It is shocking and sad, but we have a few hints as to why.

We are them. They are us. They are deceivers, as well as deceived.

Jesus is coming soon, and this kind of thing is predicted.

I had hoped that somehow with the history and hard work of America, from her foundations up, would be spared from what is coming. But I am convinced of otherwise now, but also God is available through Jesus to every soul who calls on Him, and trusts in Him, and not a country, or a president, or a king, or their knowledge, or their money, or their virility. JESUS IS LORD, and HE is coming back for His own. May you and I and Obama and all the world be saved and waiting.
